LAO CAI — The fire at Hoang Lien National Park in Sa Pa District was completely controlled yesterday after a four-day effort involving 1,500 people, including soldiers, militia, forest rangers and locals.
The fire occurred at a height of 1,800-2,000mabove sea level, making it difficult to control because of strong winds and limited telecommunication coverage, according to local authorities.
The people combating the fire gradually left the spot, and only a group of forest rangers stayed to deal with the consequences and prevent the spread of flames.
Another fire that broke out in Sa Pa Town in the buffer zone of Hoang Lien National Park yesterday was also extinguished. It is estimated to have burned down 13-15ha of forest. — VNS
