HA NOI — French President Nicolas Sarkozy has conferred the National Order of the Legion of Honour on Professor of Mathematics Ngo Bao Chau at the Elysee Palace.
The decree was signed on April 22, 2011, to honour Professor Chau's great contributions to French and Vietnamese education.
In 2010 Chau won the renowned Fields medal for his solution to a mathematical problem that had remained unresolved for 30 years. The 40-year-old Vietnamese-born professor also holds French citizenship.
The order, the highest decoration in France, was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. — VNS
