HA NOI (VNS)–Ha Noi Market Watch Officers and Tay Ho District Police impounded about 3 tonnes of chicken and pig meat illegally smuggled into the country in Gia Lam District this morning.

The driver of the truck transporting the products did not have a quarantine certificate for the food. Labelled as made in China, the meat was stored in boxes with signs of water leakage and a bad smell.

Le Manh Hung, head of the market watch team, said the goods were being transported from the northern border province of Lang Son to Ha Noi for sale.

"If they were not detected in time, the goods would have been brought to restaurants, resulting in serious health hazards," said Hung.

The seized products will be sent to the provincial veterinary unit to be destroyed in line with current regulations, he added.-- VNS
