Net security to be tightened
HA NOI (VNS)— Authorities will strengthen information security among State offices and State-owned enterprises due to increasing information and network insecurity, heard a conference in the capital on Friday.
The conference, dubbed "Security for information among State offices and State-owned enterprises in Ha Noi," was held by the Ha Noi Department of Information and Communications.
It focused on the current situation of information security risks in the city, infrastructure of digital signatures, and the methods to manage and optimise for internal networks, and general methods for network security for offices and enterprises.
According to Ngo Quang Huy, technology manager of Systems Engineering – Center of the Computer Emergency Response Team Viet Nam (VNCERT), there are many dangerous softwares designed to steal information.
Mail systems are attacked due to weak passwords, while software applications take errors related to SQL (Special-Purpose Programming Language) injection and XSS (Ross Site Scripting). Other causes include the poor configuration of web servers and lack of quality web application development.
In 2011, Viet Nam detected 16 types of toxic codes including Misc Trojan, Worms, Viruses, Exploitss, Trojan downloaders and Droppers, Adware, Backdoors, Spyware, Password Stealers and Monitoring Tools. Malware hosting sites account for 2.83 per cent of toxic codes, while phising sites account for 0.59 per cent, much higher than the wordwide figure.
Last year, Ha Noi focused on investment in information technology infrastructure. Those using computers in state offices at district level accounted for 87 per cent in 2011 while those at commune level accounted for 65 per cent of all users, according to local department statistics.
Most departments and districts are connected to the WAN network and all State offices use administrative and human resouce software to record births, deaths and marriages, and land management.
In fact, State offices and enterprises in the city take interest in the security of private servers, anti-virus software, firewalls, and software that warns of illegal access.
Huy suggested that the authorities should invest in the technology system to assure information security in investment projects and development and implementation of information technology, he said.
Huy also emphasised that using digital information safety services supplied by enterprises offering internet services should link to special agencies such as the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of National Defence and Government Office.
Meanwhile, Tran Quang Ky, deputy director of the Viet Nam Government Cryptographic Agency, said that the authorities should focus on developing infrastructure for e-government, developing public services and e-citizens as well as information security for it. — VNS
