Commune officials jailed for illegally taking land

HAI PHONG – (VNS)Seven former officials in Tu Son Commune in Hai Phong City's Kien Thuy District were sentenced to three years to five years' jail for abuse of power and illegally acquiring and allocating nearly 27,000 sq.m. of land.

At the municipal People's Court yesterday, the accused, including the former chairman and vice chairman of the People's Committee and People's Council admitted acquiring farm land from 218 families and giving it to another 249 families, including their relatives, to build houses.

They allegedly made more than VND19.2 billion (US$915,000) on the deal.

The accused also claimed that higher level district officials were also involved in the violations. This is being investigated.

The Illegally acquired land has yet to be returned to its rightful owners. –  VNS
