Island's water wells drying up

QUANG NGAI – About 500 water wells serving 20,000 people in Quang Ngai's Ly Son Island have become saline due to sea water intrusion or have simply dried out in the prolonged hot weather.

The district's Agricultural Promotion Department said farmers may lose some 70ha of crops as a result.

Local authorities are trying to dredge the wells' beds while also digging new ones. — VNS

Ly Son Island needs to invest in a sea water Desalination plant to provide Fresh water. Evaporator type plants have been in use for many areas where salt water intrusion has caused problems. These types of plants take sea water and create high temperature evaporation allowing the fresh water to be extracted leaving thesalt brine behind. The salt is then collected and used commercially. The heat is provided through high pressure turbines and redirection of thermal exhaust to superheated steam. Natural gas provides the fuel for the boilers and turbines.
