HA NOI — A solemn meeting was held in Ha Noi yesterday to mark the 65th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs' Day. Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung attended the event.

Speaking at the function, PM Dung said that in past decades, the Party and State had attached great importance to caring for war invalids, sick soldiers and the families of fallen soldiers, along with all those who had rendered their services to the nation.

The movement to pay the debt of gratitude to those who made great contributions to the country had developed widely, becoming a regular activity among all people, he said.

Upholding the tradition of "when drinking water, remember its source", the Party, State and people would continue efforts to improve the material and spiritual lives of people of merit, ensuring their living standards were the same as or higher than the local average.

The Government leader asked all local authorities, agencies and organisations to conduct more communication activities to raise awareness of the tradition of patriotism and gratitude among all people, especially younger generations.

He also expressed his wish that people would continue to uphold the revolutionary tradition and set examples in implementing the Party and the State's policies, and overcome difficulties not only to build better lives for themselves and their families, but also to contribute to the development of the country.

President Truong Tan Sang also sent his best regards to war invalids, sick soldiers and families of fallen soldiers and people who had rendered great service to the nation.

In a statement on Thursday, Sang hailed their efforts and achievements. He also said he was grateful to those who had made contributions to the nation. This included those who gained achievements through their studies and production.

The President requested Party Committees, authorities, the Fatherland Front, mass organisations and agencies to join the people in improving the material and spiritual lives of those deserving merit. — VNS
