HCM CITY (VNS) — After a week-long court session, the HCM City People's Court yesterday sentenced fifty nine members of gambling ring M88 up to seven years in jail.

The huge online betting ring on the website, M88.com, which allegedly took more than VND1 trillion (US$46.5 million) in bets on football matches, was busted in July last year.

Nguyen Le Sang and Cu Thi Thanh Hai have received the longest prison sentence of seven years for organising illegal gambling.

Cu Huy Giap and Pham Thi Kim Loan have been awarded a five-year prison term, while Nguyen Van Nam and Le Van Hai will serve 2.5 years and two years and 18 days, respectively, under the same charge.

All convicts are required to pay fines ranging from VND30 million ($1,400) to VND50 million ($2,300).

Dao Ngoc Quy, one of the remaining 53 convicts, has received four years in prison for illegal gambling.

Quy was one of the major gamblers on the website, betting a total of VND8.8 billion ($409,300) on football matches and losing about VND6 billion ($279,000).

Other gamblers have been given 2.5 years to a suspended sentence of two years.

They have been fined VND5-30 million ($232-1,400) each.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Vo Hoai Tram, the alleged leader of the ring, is still on the run. — VNS
