Schoolgirl drownings investigated

HA NOI (VNS)— Police are investigating the deaths of eight school girls in Ha Noi's outlying district of My Duc after they drowned in Tuy Lai Lake yesterday afternoon.

The teenage girls, all eighth graders at An My Junior Secondary School, were last seen when their class finished at midday, said the school's vice principal Nguyen Huu Tam.

Two other teenagers in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong also drowned while trying to escape traffic police on Tuesday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy from Quang Loc Village was driving a motorbike to take a 14-year-old girl and another classmate home from school when they saw the police and sped up. The boy eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Quang Loc dam. — VNS
