Jail for 29 involved in human trafficking ring

Update: March, 10/2012 - 09:33

HA NOI — Twenty-nine people involved in a widespread human trafficking ring were sentenced on Wednesday by the Ha Noi People's Court from eight to 26 years' jail for trafficking women and children, organising prostitution and covering up criminals.

The ring is alleged to be involved in many northern provinces and cities, including, Hai Phong, Lao Cai, Thai Binh and China.

Their victims, including two girls under 13 from Hai Phong, were ill-treated and taken to work as prostitutes in brothels in Hai Phong and traded to China for the same purpose.

The trafficking ring was discovered in 2010 when one of the accused, Nguyen Thi Thuy, was caught red-handed by Ha Noi police as she tried to take a girl to Lao Cai from Ha Noi Station on the first stage of a one-way trip to China. — VNS
