Capital reduces theft on public buses

HA NOI – The number of thieves, swindlers and gamblers on public bus routes and at shopping centres has been brought under control, according to city Police Director Nguyen Duc Nhanh.

Counter measures were kicked off last October when the situation grew out of hand.

Ten teams were set up with the aim of fighting and suppressing criminal activities on buses and at shopping centres. A hotline (0977778189) was promoted on more than 3,000 buses for passengers and bus staff to denounce criminals.

After three months, police had received 186 calls from passengers, of which 164 dealt with thieves operating on bus routes and stops. Thanks to public initiative, as many as 71 culprits were arrested.

Police additionally apprehended 68 thieves, two swindlers and ten illegal gamblers (the activity is illegal in Viet Nam) in the city.

In addition, exhibits including VND11.7 million (US$557), 41 mobile phones, three cameras, five ATM cards, two knifes and a plier were seized by city police. -- VNS
