HCM CITY — An appeals court in HCM City yesterday decided to reduce by three months a 9-month jail sentence awarded to teenager Pham Thi My Linh for slapping the face of a traffic policeman on duty in District 12.
Linh had been awarded the 9-month jail term by the court of first instance, the district People's Court, in August last year. The 18-year-old later appealed the decision, asking for a suspended sentence to help her continue her studies.
The appeals court yesterday rejected her request, but granted a reduction in the sentence, taking into consideration her confession, expression of regret and her age.
In June, Linh's mother Truong Thi Hanh was driving her and her brother on a bike on a one way street. When they were stopped and the traffic policemen were recording the violation, Linh attacked one of them and slapped him twice in the face. — VNS
