HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Public Security has filed an additional charge of “abuse of position and power while on duty” against Phan Văn Anh Vũ, also known as Vũ “Nhôm”, who already faced two charges of “deliberately disclosing state secrets” and “tax evasion”.

The ministry’s Security Investigation Department said on Wednesday during a press conference that it has been investigating Vũ, a 43-year-old businessman from Hải Châu District, central city of Đà Nẵng, after the Supreme People’s Procuracy issued decision 06/QĐ-VKSTC-V1 dated January 6, 2018 on the case.

During the course of the investigation, the department issued a decision on Wednesday to commence criminal proceedings against Vũ and an order to put Vũ in temporary detention for four months for further investigation into Vũ’s transgressions, as well as into some related organisations and individuals involved in trading public-owned land and houses in Đà Nẵng and other cities and provinces.

On the same day, the Supreme People’s Procuracy approved the decision and orders.

The Security Investigation Department issued an arrest warrant for Vũ on December 21, 2017. He fled to Singapore but was then deported for violating the Immigration Act of Singapore. Vũ was arrested upon his arrival in Việt Nam on January 4. — VNS
