Former Cuban military officer Julio A. García Oliveras, who served as the first Cuban ambassador to Việt Nam, has died at the age of 86.

HÀ NỘI — Former Cuban military officer Julio A. García Oliveras, who served as the first Cuban ambassador to Việt Nam, has died at the age of 86.

Julio A. García Oliveras was born in 1931 in La Habana. He was an architect and an economics doctor, who graduated in the Military Advanced Course of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. He joined the Cuban Revolution early and was promoted to commander in 1959. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1969 to 1986.

While serving as Cuban ambassador to Việt Nam from 1966 to 1969, he also served as head of the Cuban military mission in Việt Nam, Laos, and Cambodia. He later held leadership positions in various fields.

He published many books, mainly on history, including "Hồ Chí Minh, the patriot, 60 years of revolutionary struggle.”

On Sunday, the Vietnamese delegation, led by Ambassador Nguyễn Trung Thành, paid their last respects to Julio A. García Oliveras, a close friend of the Vietnamese people and a knowledgeable scholar of Việt Nam. — VNS
