HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam adamantly opposes the Chinese Navy’s commemoration of the so-called 70 years of the recovery of two archipelagoes in the East Sea, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lê Hải Bình said on Monday.
He made the statement while answering reporters’ questions about Việt Nam’s response to the Chinese Navy’s marking of the anniversary of recovering Hoàng Sa (Paracel) and Trường Sa (Spratly) Islands on December 8.
“Việt Nam has sufficient historical evidence and legal foundation to affirm its sovereignty over Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa archipelagoes – Việt Nam’s long-standing territories. After World War II, the international community rejected China’s claim to these islands”, he said.
“China’s above-mentioned activity is unable to alter Việt Nam’s sovereignty over Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa, runs counter to the current development trend of the two countries’ relations, and complicates the situation. Việt Nam resolutely opposes that activity,” Bình emphasised. – VNS
