HÀ NỘI — Delegations from Việt Nam and China discussed the potential for trade and tourism co-operation between the two countries in a meeting held on Wednesday morning in Hà Nội.

The meeting, aimed at boosting the friendship relation and exploring more opportunities for cooperation, was organised by the Việt Nam Union of Friendship Organisations in collaboration with the Chinese People’s External Friendship Association.

It was held as a Chinese delegation, led by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of Chinese Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), is visiting Việt Nam from November 8 to 11.

The meeting included representatives from six Chinese regions of Guangxi, Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan, Sichuan and Shandong, delegates from Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, Lào Cai, Quảng Ninh, Nghệ An and Khánh Hòa provinces in Việt Nam and from the three cities of Hà Nội, Hải Phòng and HCM City.

Speaking at the meeting, Nguyễn Thiện Nhân, President of Việt Nam Fatherland Front, said Việt Nam attached special importance to its friendship with China and gave it a top priority in its foreign policy.

Nhân said Việt Nam as well as China were embarking on an important phase of the renewal and open-door process thus ensuring a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment for national construction and development were the common interests.

Fostering friendship and developing relations in a healthy and sustainable manner are crucial for both countries’ development and would also contribute to peace, stability and development in the region and the world, Nhân said.

He said, bilateral trade between Việt Nam and China touched over US$51 billion in the first nine months of this year, adding that Việt Nam is China’s biggest partner in the ASEAN region.

It is estimated that nearly 2 million Chinese visited Việt Nam between January and September 2016, ranking first among the number of foreign visitors to Việt Nam, Nhan said.

Zhang Dejiang said the meeting would help in raising mutual understanding and trust between the two sides.

The two countries need to continue strengthening strategic co-operations, boosting co-operations at local level, and organising more Việt Nam – China People’s Forum in order to consolidate the relationship between Việt Nam and China, he said. — VNS
