HA NOI (VNS) — The National Election Council (NEC) in the third session in Ha Noi yesterday, approved two resolutions with regard to the two upcoming elections.

The first was on the election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA), and the second on the all-level People's Councils for the 2016 to 2021 tenure.

The council approved a resolution on the number and list of constituencies and the number of NA deputies to be elected in each constituency nationwide. The other resolution is on the principles of apportioning candidates from central agencies to localities.

Speaking at the session, NA Chairman and NEC Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung recognised the progress of preparations for the elections by relevant agencies, particularly the Viet Nam Fatherland Front and the NEC's sub-committees and members.

As the election is less than three months away (May 22), the workload on sectors, levels and the NEC members is very heavy. Meanwhile, the 13th NA and its subordinate bodies are promptly gearing up for the next meeting of the NA Standing Committee, which will finalise the agenda of the last session of the 13th NA, he noted.

He said the communication about the election was still below expectations, asking sectors and localities at all levels to pay more attention to this work while readying to ensure security and order.

At the third session, the NEC members agreed on the plan to examine and supervise local preparations for the election.

Also yesterday, a conference was held in the central city of Da Nang to review the work of the NA Judicial Committee in the last term.

The committee's chairman Nguyen Van Hien said that in the 13th term from 2011 to 2016, the judicial committee had made positive changes in activities of investigation, prosecution and adjudication.

It had also contributed a lot into the enforcement, prevention and fight against corruption, ensuring the objectives of building a transparent, strong and democratic justice of Viet Nam, he said.

According to Hien, many important laws under the committee's charge of evaluation had been adopted by the National Assembly including the revised Law on the Organisation of the People's Procuracy, the revised Law on the Organisation of People's Court, the revised Law on the Organisation of Criminal Investigation Agencies, and the revised Criminal Code, in addition to the revised Criminal Procedure Code, the Law on Custody and Detention, and the revised Law on Anti-corruption. — VNS
