HA NOI (VNS) — President Truong Tan Sang announced the promotion of two senior Vietnamese military officials to the rank of general during a ceremony in Ha Noi yesterday.

The two officials are Ngo Xuan Lich, secretary of the Party Central Committee and chief of the general department of politics under the Vietnam People's Army, and Do Ba Ty, member of the party central committee, chief of general staff of the Viet Nam People's Army and defence minister.

In his speech, President Sang lauded the two new generals for their dedication to national liberation and reunification efforts in the past, as well as their current construction and defence initiatives.

He asked them to further exercise their ability, brainpower and strong will; uphold the glorious tradition of the Viet Nam People's Army; and to stay absolutely loyal to the party, state, nation and people.

He said they should closely follow campaigns on national defence in the new context, party build-up, and study and follow the moral examples set by late President Ho Chi Minh, with initial focus on the preparations for all-level party congresses and the 12th National Party Congress.

General Ngo Xuan Lich, on behalf of his fellow recipient, pledged to remain loyal to and be deserving of trust of the party, state and people, while playing an exemplary role in building a strong army for the sake of national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.— VNS
