HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam is demanding that Thailand promptly investigate individuals on a Thai boat that chased and attacked Vietnamese fishing boats, leaving one Vietnamese fisherman dead and two others injured, Spokesman of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Le Hai Binh said yesterday.
According to Binh, Vietnamese authorised agencies reported that fishing boats from the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang that were operating illegally in Thailand's sea were chased and attacked with weapons by a Thai boat on September 11. The Foreign Ministry has been in contact with relevant agencies, including the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand, to verify the case, he said.
The Viet Nam Embassy in Thailand cited the Thai Foreign Ministry as saying that Thailand is verifying the incident and will report its investigation outcomes as soon as possible, Binh said.
Viet Nam's Foreign Ministry also sent a diplomatic note yesterday to the Ha Noi-based Thai Embassy, voicing deep concern over the incident and asking Thailand to investigate the case.
The ministry said Viet Nam strongly condemns inhuman treatment and the use of threat and force against Vietnamese fishermen.
In addition to investigating the case and dealing with the involved persons, Thailand must properly compensate for human and property losses of Vietnamese fishermen while preventing similar incidents, ultimately avoiding impacts on the two countries' strategic partnership, Binh said.
Viet Nam's relevant agencies have been working closely together to enhance management and supervision over its fishermen's activities to prevent violations of neighbouring countries' seas, he added. — VNS
