President sends off IMF chief

HA NOI (VNS) — President Truong Tan Sang has asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continue supporting Viet Nam both financially and through policy consultations.

Speaking to Sanjay Kalra, resident representative of IMF for Viet Nam and Laos in Ha Noi yesterday, Sang said that Viet Nam would always welcome and be ready to listen to IMF's straight opinions.

He said based on learning and listening to international experiences, Viet Nam would take efforts to avoid risks that had hurt other countries.

The IMF chief, who will shortly end his tenure in Viet Nam, said that every country was striving for stability in economic re-structuring.

He said Viet Nam had proved that it could stand still before challenges, he said, adding that he believed Viet Nam would play a more and more important role in the region.

He said he came to Viet Nam three years ago as an IMF official but would leave Viet Nam as a friend. — VNS
