HA NOI (VNS) — There was great potential for co-operation between Viet Nam and Azerbaijan in the oil and gas sector, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said before Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang's visit to his country today.

Aliyev said both countries had extensive success in the field and agreement on strategic co-operation between the national oil and gas corporations in the two countries offered strong prospects.

He said the agreement on economic, commercial, scientific and technical co-operation between the two governments served as a firm foundation for bilateral economic ties, adding that what was needed was to study, define and develop new areas.

According to the president, both countries had substantial potential to deepen co-operation in education, culture and tourism.

The State leader said President Sang's upcoming trip to Azerbaijan was highly significant for the development of ties in politics, economics and other sectors.

The Azerbaijani president said he hoped Viet Nam would open an embassy in Baku to help bolster ties. He said the inter-parliamentary relationship between Viet Nam and Azerbaijan, consultations between the two countries and linkages between agencies would contribute to relations.

He added that it was also important to strengthen co-operation in international organisations that both nations belonged to. — VNS
