HA NOI (VNS) — National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung yesterday received a delegation of US Congressman led by Matt Salmon, chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, calling for stronger ties between the two legislative bodies.
Chairman Hung said he was delighted at the development in US-Viet Nam relations, especially as this year marked the twentieth year of bilateral relations.
Hung also said Viet Nam appreciated efforts by the US Government and Congress to help overcome the aftermaths of the war, especially the consequences of Agent Orange.
He said he hoped the two bodies would step up bilateral co-operation and increase mutual support at international parliamentary forums.
Salmon replied that he highly regarded the role of the NA in the socio-economic development of Viet Nam, especially in building and revising laws. He said the US Congress would be willing to offer assistance to Viet Nam in legislative affairs and support Viet Nam in joining the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
The US delegation also met Hoang Binh Quan, head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for External Relations. — VNS
