CAN THO (VNS) — Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc reviewed the performance of the Steering Committees of the Northwest, Southwest and Central Highlands regions in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho yesterday.

The Deputy PM, who is also head of the Northwest Steering Committee, praised officials for managing difficult and sensitive issues in these areas and contributing to the socio-economic development of the country's most impoverished regions.

In preparation for an upcoming conference between the three committees in July, the Deputy Prime Minister called for increased oversight of a situation complicated by border and external security, religious issues and drug crimes.

He said that ensuring border security was a key priority, suggesting a strengthened comprehensive political system, intensified external relations and improved living standards for ethnic groups.

Phuc also asked leaders to improve regional links in economics and culture to make things more practical.

He said financial management, border roads and socio-economic development projects were other priorities.

Phuc praised efforts by the Vietnam News Agency, including delivery of the Tin Tuc (News) newspaper to these regions which publicised the activities of the committees. — VNS
