Conference compiles ideas to safeguard human rights

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam's Committee on Democracy and Human Rights met yesterday to seek consultation on issues to be tabled at the 132nd conference of the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Recommendations from government bodies, social organisations, scientists, researchers and experts on democracy and human rights have been collected and will be represented by the committee at the IPU.

Vice National Assembly Chairperson Uong Chu Luu said that while both democracy and human rights were universal core values, they must be defined in national constitutions and laws.

Luu stressed the significant role of the committee on democracy in facilitating greater democracy and human rights as well as related laws, adding that the ultimate goals included better ways of supervising government initiatives, increased legislative power and greater freedom and democracy towards peace and sustainable development.

Delegates discussed draft resolutions entitled International law as it relates to national sovereignty and non-intervention in the internal affairs of states and human rights and Democracy in the digital era and the threat to privacy and individual freedoms together with issues concerning the rights of children and the health of women, children and adolescents.

The delegates hope their efforts will help strengthen the Vietnamese National Assembly, and State and public points of view on issues to be considered at IPU.

The IPU-132 will be held in Ha Noi from March 28 to April 1. — VNS
