HCM CITY (VNS) — The annual flower road on HCM City's Ham Nghi Street was opened on February 16 in the presence of President Truong Tan Sang and top national and city leaders.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, deputy chairwoman of the National Assembly, Secretary of HCM City's Party Committee Le Thanh Hai and Chairman of HCM City's People's Committee Le Hoang Quan joined the President in cutting the red ribbon at the flower road's opening ceremony.

The At Mui Flower Road, opened to attract local residents and tourists during Tet (Lunar New Year Holiday), was completed after 10 days of preparations by more than 80 workers from Binh Quoi Tourist Village. On display are more than 120,000 pots of a variety of flowers brought from Sa Dec City in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, Da Lat City in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong and some plant companies in HCM City.

According to the HCM City-owned Saigontourist, the company responsible for the arrangements every year, the street will be divided into three main segments this year: Viet Nam's Magnanimity (Hao Khi Viet Nam); Vietnamese Identity (Ban Sac Viet); and Glory Viet Nam (Vinh Quang Viet Nam).

As usual, the mascot of the upcoming New Year will be displayed at one end of the street, along with flowers and other decorations showcasing the beauty of Viet Nam's countryside, the proposed metro systems and other images representing Vietnamese traditions and the country's largest city.

After the 580m-long road was opened to the public, thousands of people came to see the flowers and take photos. A visit to the At Mui Flower Road has long become one of activities of HCM City's dwellers every Lunar New Year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan said that over the past decade, the flower road has become an essential cultural activity of the people in HCM City.
