HAI DUONG (VNS)  — President Truong Tan Sang yesterday asked a commune in the northern province of Hai Duong, which gained the new rural area status by the end of last year, to continue the good work.

Speaking to residents of Nhan Quyen Commune in Binh Giang District, which is home to more than 2,000 households, the President said that though the commune had met all 19 criteria of the Government's new rural area programme, the people should not feel satisfied with the status, but they should promote their advantages for communal development.

Sang said that the commune should encourage enterprises to invest in equipment, science and technology to mechanise agriculture.

He also urged the commune to solve problems with raising seedlings and breeding, developing local handicrafts and creating employment.

Authorities briefed the President on the results of the new rural area programme after four years of implementation, saying that the commune took great efforts to meet requirements on infrastructure, environment protection, social security, agricultural and business production, livelihoods culture.

Since 2010, annual growth rate reached 10 to 12 per cent. Per capita income increased from VND10 million (US$470) in 2010 to VND29 million ($1,380) last year.

In 2010, the commune only received 12 out of the total 19 new rural area criteria but by the end of last year, it successfully met all criteria.

However, local authorities also showed some difficulties during the implementation as they did not have an exemplary model to follow.

They also said that local staff had limited capacity in spreading information.

President Sang praised the efforts of local authorities and said that the experiences of the commune in building new rural area could be extended to other communes.

The President presented Tet gifts to 10 underprivileged families in the commune. The same day, Sang offered Tet greetings to a veteran, a 93-year-old national heroic mother and a war invalid in Hai Duong City. — VNS
