HA NOI (VNS) — Experience has shown that the leadership of the Communist Party of Viet Nam has been a decisive factor in every victory achieved by the nation over the last 85 years, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said at a meeting in the capital city yesterday.

The meeting was held to mark the 85th founding anniversary of the Party (February 3, 1930 - February 3, 2015).

Dignitaries attending the meeting included former Party General Secretaries Do Muoi, Le Kha Phieu, Nong Duc Manh, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.

Reviewing the Party's history, Trong said: "Since its birth, the Communist Party of Viet Nam has been the leader and organiser for all victories of the Vietnamese revolution. The Party's coming into being marked an important turning point in the Vietnamese revolution. It was as a milestone in our nation's development."

Admitting that the Party had made some mistakes over the winding and complicated path that the nation has had to take, the Party leader stressed that the Vietnamese revolution had overcome all difficulties and hardships and won resounding victories.

"Our people, under the Party's leadership, recorded great exploits in the 20th century, particularly the 1945 August Revolution; victories in national resistance to liberate the country from foreign invaders and to defend the homeland; and the victory in the present course of renewal and firm advance towards socialism.

Looking back on the victories achieved under the Party's leadership through years of hardships, difficulties and sacrifices "makes us even more proud of our late President Ho Chi Minh and of our nation – a heroic, intelligent and creative nation," Trong said.

He said the Party, people and armed forces were striving hard to comprehensively and synchronously carry out the national renewal programme, the nation's industrialization and modernisation process as well as development of a socialist-oriented market economy.

Even as Viet Nam deepens its international integration, the nation remained focused on the twin tasks of nation-building and "firmly defending our Socialist homeland for prosperity, national strength, democracy, equality and a civilized society," he said.

In the key task of Party-building, a campaign has been launched to rectify mistakes in line with the 4th Resolution of the Party Central Committee, 11th tenure, he said.

"In this campaign, we'll try to enhance our fine traditions while maintaining and enhancing the revolutionary nature and vanguard position of the Party. We'll build our party into a clean and strong organisation politically, ideologically and organisationally. We'll try to strengthen the relationship between the Party and the people to ensure the Party has sufficient strength to take the nation to a higher level.

"Today, we're here to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Party at the time when our country has undergone almost 30 years of renewal. In these 30 years, our country has achieved many big, historical victories. From a poor and backward country that suffered many years of war and blockades, Viet Nam has surged ahead and gained many economic achievements in industrialisation and modernisation, particularly the 2011-2015 socio-economic plan."
