HA NOI (VNS) –President Truong Tan Sang has sent a message to the country on seizing opportunities and promoting the strength of the entire nation to safeguard national interests and take the country forward in an article on the occasion of the New Year, 2015.

The President says 2014 was an eventful year with tremendous difficulties and challenges for the country, but we overcame them all. On the threshold of the new year, the Vietnamese nation has new vitality and a resolve to make more efforts to achieve success in a year with many major events: the 85th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the southern region and national reunification, the 125th birthday anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh, the 30th anniversary of the renewal process and the approach of the 12th National Party Congress. New visions, new tasks, new strength, new ways of action and a belief in new success will help bring success, he says.

Emphasising that sustainable development is a strategic choice, the President says in the article: "We are living in the era of globalisation. All of its complicated and unpredictable opportunities, risks, chances and challenges are mixed and changeable. We can either lag behind or make breakthroughs to catch up with the world and master our fate. Stopping also means falling behind. Being left behind, especially in terms of the economy, is a risk our Party warned us about 20 years ago in January 1994. Our nation has exerted ceaseless efforts to overcome that risk over the past two decades."

The President affirms that the only correct path is to strive for sustainable development, as mankind's marching pace never waits for anyone. Global competition contains risks no nation is exempt from. This results in constant changes in the balance of power among countries and regions across the world.

He asserts that it is every Vietnamese citizen's undeniable responsibility, sacred mission and honour to help the country develop in a sustainable manner and narrow the economic development gap between Viet Nam and developed countries in the region and beyond. The end goal is creating a strong country with wealthy people.

"Therefore, in 2015 and the following years, with the country and people's firm will, brainpower and potential, we need to focus on removing hindrances, and overcoming limitations and weaknesses, in order to swiftly reverse the decline of the past few years. We must also recover the growth rate, while accelerating the country's renewal, industrialisation, modernisation and global integration processes in a creative and effective manner. It is also important to fulfill the task of renewing the growth model so we can create economic development on par with developed countries in the region," the President says.

He stresses that sustainable development is a strategic choice for our country in its current situation. It is a measurement of Vietnamese capacity and brainpower in the light of global competition, which will shape its future image and decide the role and position of Viet Nam in the world in the next decades.

At the same time, the President reiterates that protecting the interests of the country and the nation is the supreme goal, underlining that for thousands of years, national interests have always been our ancestors' first priorities in all circumstances, thus creating a strong country for future generations.

Amidst the fierce global competition at present, the saying "Nothing is as valuable as independence and freedom" has become truer than ever, he says. He stressed that our country integrates into the world to learn and acquire the quintessence of mankind and enrich the unique Vietnamese culture. It also does so to make use of external forces, stimulate our internal strength and turn external forces into internal power to build a strong and prosperous country standing alongside powers on all continents, so that our people can live a free, happy life free from wanting.

"The interests of our country, our nation are very specific: They are independence, sovereignty, unification, sacred territorial integrity, the socialist regime, the strength and prosperity of the country, and the freedom and happiness of the people," the President says. He affirms that we are ready to overcome any difficulties to achieve those goals. They are  also the foundation we use to define what we should do and what we should avoid, as well as the criteria for us to recognise who our friends, enemies, and partners in specific fields and situations are. According to the President, from our Party's viewpoint, those who respect Viet Nam's independence and sovereignty, establish and expand friendship and equal and mutually-beneficial co-operation with Viet Nam are partners of our country. Any forces which plot and act against our goals of national construction and defence are subjects of struggle.

The President notes that winning the hearts of the people is the basic lesson, underlying the thousand-year history of national building and defence of our country, as well as the history of all countries all over the world. This has proved the fact that it is the people that make history and the people are invincible.

He notes that the thorough understanding and good implementation of President Ho Chi Minh's ideology – that the people are the root of all power and the power of the people is unbeatable – has created the strength that brought about all of Viet Nam's victories in past 85 years.

President Sang reiterates that Viet Nam's enormous achievements in the past 30 years during its renewal process can be attributed to the contributions of all people under the leadership of the Party.

"It is inevitable that a big ship would encounter huge waves and strong winds when sailing offshore. Nowadays, the renewal cause continues towards the goal of ‘a rich people and a strong, democratic, equitable, and civilised nation' and firmly safeguards the land, sky, sea, border and islands that our ancestors have passed down. It also protects our revolutionary achievements and the peaceful lives of our people," he says, noting that there are still some who want to hamper and weaken Viet Nam in order to control our country, while some others seek to occupy our land, sea, and islands. Only the consensus of the entire people and great national solidarity can create the invincible power that helps us weather all huge waves and strong winds, the President stresses.

The President, at the same time, asserts that Viet Nam's moral standard is preserving and treasuring peace and friendship.

He affirms that the Vietnamese people love peace and always wish to live in peace to build and develop the country, and always desire friendship and cooperation with neighbouring countries and others around the globe. They only take up weapons when forced to fight against invaders, and protect national freedom and sovereignty.

"Nowadays, inheriting and upholding the nation's fine and humanistic tradition that matches the current context, Viet Nam is integrating into the international community with a hope of creating friendships and co-operating with all countries on the basis of equality; respect for one another's independence, sovereignty, unification, territorial integrity and political regimes; balance of interests and mutual benefits for peace, stability, and development of Viet Nam, the region and the entire world. Viet Nam is willing to be a friend, a trustworthy partner and a responsible member of the international community. Amidst current complicated global developments, the country condemns all invading wars, terrorist activities, actions that cause disturbances and interventions in internal affairs of sovereign countries. Viet Nam supports struggles for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress," the President says.

He emphasises that Viet Nam resolutely opposes plots and acts that trigger disputes in the East Sea and threaten Viet Nam's sea and island sovereignty, amid complicated developments in the region.

"To us, the homeland's sea and island sovereignty is sacred and inviolable, and is a priceless asset that ancestors passed down. Today's generations are obliged to preserve and protect it for future generations. Inheriting the nation's peace-loving, friendly, and benevolent tradition, we will persist in solving disputes peacefully in line with international law, agreements between ASEAN and China, and those between Vietnamese and Chinese leaders in order to safeguard the national sea and island sovereignty. We will also solve disputes peacefully to ensure a peaceful and stable environment in Viet Nam and in the region, and to ensure freedom, security and safety on a shipping route of huge importance to the world. Justice and reason belong to our people. We uphold justice to unite and show the strength of the entire nation, its people and overseas compatriots. We also uphold justice to call for support from other countries and the international community for Viet Nam's struggle. At the same time, Viet Nam always actively prepares other appropriate solutions, to be ready to firmly safeguard the nation's sacred territory, sea, and islands in any situation," the President says.

He expresses the belief that Viet Nam is marching on the path to socialism in a firm, confident and strong manner, and that it is continuing towards success in the renewal process. It is also joining hands with mankind in building a progressive world of peace, stability, friendship, co-operation and prosperity. -- VNS
