HA NOI (VNS) — Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong called for perseverance in the fight against corruption, with a focus on revising socio-economic management regulations and increasing co-operation among relevant agencies.
Chairing the sixth session of the Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption in Ha Noi on December 29, the Party chief requested members to deal with negative behaviours in the Party ranks, such as graft and corruption, as part of efforts to hold the Party Committees at all levels across the country next year.
He asked the committee to brainstorm ways to combat petty graft in ministries and localities and improve the sense of responsibility among its members.
Looking back at this year's efforts to curb corruption, the leader lauded the committee for setting up four inspection teams in eight provinces and seven others in ministries and agencies, which all produced positive results.
Corruption investigations and trials had become less time-consuming and educational campaigns had resulted in fewer such cases, he said. However, the fight against corruption still faced major obstacles such as the lack of legal frameworks and policies, poor implementation of measures to prevent corruption at the local level and inadequate punishments compared to the seriousness of the crime.
Moreover, the asset recovery rate was low and some Party cadres had failed to fight corruption in their own organisations. Co-operation between agencies to detect and handle corruption cases also left much to be desired.
Next year, the committee will push for the educational campaign in line with the Resolution on Party building adopted by the fourth plenum of the Party Central Committee (11th tenure) and the Politburo's directive on spreading a drive to study and follow the moral examples of President Ho Chi Minh.
In addition to fine-tuning socio-economic regulations to fight corruption, the committee will strengthen Party leadership on asset declaration and discovery of corruption cases. Cases of public concern will face the full brunt of the law, especially those under the watch of the committee and the Party Central Committee's Commission for Internal Affairs.
In accordance with the Politburo's plan, the committee will increase the role of elective units, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, socio-political organisations, the media and the public in the fight against corruption. — VNS
