HA NOI (VNS) — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has praised outstanding residents, war invalids and martyrs' families in the northwestern region for their contributions to socio-economic development, culture, security and defence during a reception for regional representatives in Ha Noi yesterday.
He noted that the northwestern region, with a population of more than 10 million, has made a number of achievements in all areas.
In the past 10 years, the regional economy had grown rapidly, with per capita income rising, the economic structure changing, and socio-economic infrastructure improving.
Cultural services and social welfare programmes had also improved, while security and defence contributed to a borderline of peace, friendship, co-operation and development, he said.
However, he also noted that poverty was still high, highlighting the need to boost efforts for sustainable socio-economic development.
Dung also urged the National Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region to pay greater attention to policies for the region's socio-economic development and the creation of a shared border of peace and stability with its neighbours. — VNS
