VIENTIANE (VNS) — Vietnamese and Lao committees urged residents living in border areas to work together to maintain order along country lines during a meeting yesterday in the Lao central province of Khammuone.

The Central Committees of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front and the Lao Front for National Construction organised a conference on creating a friendlier border.

Though the two countries have co-operated in a number of fields, the meeting aimed to diversify their partnership and develop their friendship.

Guidelines were disseminated among the two countries' residents to increase their awareness of the governments' roles in jointly safeguarding the border.

With close co-operation, the two fronts, border patrol forces, foreign ministries, veterans' associations and women's unions maintained security and made strong headway on controlling crime and drug trafficking.

Participants pointed out a number of difficulties that need to be addressed and discussed a joint vision for the next two years. — VNS
