HCM CITY (VNS) — HCM City is determined to strengthen ties with Vientiane, Le Thanh Hai, Secretary of the city Party Committee, told a visiting delegation from the Lao capital on Monday.

The Lao delegation was led by the mayor of Vientiane, Sinlavong Khoutphayhoune, who hailed HCM City's socio-economic accomplishments.

Vientiane's per capita income this year was US$3,800, he told his hosts. He sought HCM City's help to improve the management of financial and legal affairs and to boost trade between the two cities, especially Lao exports of farm produce like glutinous rice and beef.

He also called for strengthening co-operation in tourism.

In the first eight months of 2014 HCM City's exports to Laos were worth $3.3 million while its imports amounted to $1.3 million, according to Vo Van Thuong, deputy secretary of the Party Committee.

The Lao Government has licensed some 40 projects by companies from HCM City with a cumulative investment of nearly $350 million. The meeting was also attended by Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee. — VNS
