VN, Russia pledge security ties

HA NOI (VNS) — Russia considers Viet Nam a trustworthy partner and will continue working together with the Southeast Asian country for results-oriented security and defence co-operation.

Yevgeny Lukyanov, deputy secretary of the Russian Federation Security Council, made these remarks at a reception which Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh hosted in the capital city yesterday.

Minh lauded the effective security and defence co-operation between the concerned agencies of Viet Nam and Russia and described Lukyanov's visit as a good opportunity for both countries to conduct an in-depth discussion on areas of their affiliation.

At the meeting, the two sides also discussed the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region and agreed on the need for regular exchanges of information on regional and international security issues of mutual concern.

Both sides also agreed to maintain close co-ordination at regional and international forums, especially within the co-operation framework of ASEAN and its partners, the East Asia Summit, APEC and the United Nations, on matters of mutual interest as well as peace and stability in the region and the world.

The Russian guest had a meeting with Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh earlier.

At the reception, general Thanh proposed the Security Council of the Russian Federation (SCRF) continue to share its expertise with Viet Nam on border protection, security of information and personnel training.

Cooperation between the two sides would contribute to fostering the defence partnership between the two countries, as well as ensuring security, public order and national sovereignty, General Thanh said in a meeting with SCRF Deputy Secretary Yevgeny Lukyanov in Ha Noi on October 9.

He also expressed his delight at the growing comprehensive partnership between Viet Nam and Russia in all fields, including security and defence, as well as the sound affiliation between his ministry and the SCRF.

On his part, Lukyanov said he hoped the in-depth coordination between Viet Nam 's Ministry of Defence and the SCRF would develop further in the future, benefitting all aspects of their cooperation.

On the same day, Deputy Minister of Public Security To Lam hosted a reception for Lukyanov, during which he expressed his pleasure that the Viet Nam–Russia bilateral strategic relationship had developed considerably over recent years, particularly in the field of security.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to boost their in-depth security ties in a bid to promote national security and public safety, and tackle transboundary and cyber crime.

The Russian guest also had a meeting with Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang. —VNA/VNS
