Ha Noi Party Committee Secretary leads delegation to US

WASHINGTON (VNS) — Politburo member and Secretary of the Ha Noi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi is leading a delegation on a US visit this week at the invitation of the US Department of State

In Washington DC, Nghi met a number of politicians, including Wendy Sherman, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs; Thomas Shannon, Counselor to the Secretary of State John Kerry; Tony Blinken, Deputy National Security Adviser for President Barack Obama; Patrick Leahy, President Pro Tempore of the US Senate, and Senator John McCain.

During the meetings, Nghi asked the US to open its market for Vietnamese products, restrict trade barriers, encourage US investment in Viet Nam and recognise the country's market economy status.

Nghi also met with Kenneth Wollack, President of the National Democratic Institute, and Mark Green, President of the International Republican Institute.

Nghi asked the US to increase assistance for Viet Nam to deal with the aftermath of the war.

The US officials said the US attached great importance to Asia-Pacific in its overall global strategy, and vowed to accelerate negotiations to complete the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement by the end of this year. They pledged to provide technical assistance for Viet Nam to help the country meet TPP commitments. — VNS
