HA NOI (VNS)  — The Party and the State always remember the great service that officers and soldiers have rendered to the nation during wars of resistance, President Truong Tan Sang has affirmed.

He received, in Ha Noi yesterday, 80 war veterans of Division 356, which played a key role in protecting the northern border in Thanh Thuy Commune, Vi Xuyen District in the northern province of Ha Giang, from 1984 to 1988.

The soldiers from the division had displayed great courage to safeguard the nation's sovereignty, Sang emphasised.

He asked ministries, agencies and localities to formulate policies for soldiers fighting in the northern battle, collect remains of their fallen peers who are still in battlefields, and build a memorial, especially one dedicated to those from Division 356.

Established in Tan Ky District in the central province of Nghe An, in 1974, Division 356 was initially tasked with combat training and production.

Between 1984 and 1988, the division was selected as a key unit in the Vi Xuyen battlefield. During the fierce battle, it contributed bravely towards maintaining national sovereignty on the border.
