HA NOI (VNS)— As a dedicated member of the United Nations (UN), Viet Nam would play an active role in the UN's peacekeeping missions, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said during a reception for visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Field Support Ameerah Haq yesterday.
At the reception, the PM emphasised the increasingly important role played by the UN in maintaining security and peace in the world.
Briefing the guest on the current tensions in the East Sea, the host also thanked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for expressing his ideas about the issue and called on the UN to continue working to ensure peace and stability in the region.
For her part, Haq welcomed Viet Nam's establishment of a peacekeeping centre and its dispatch of two officers to take part in the UN's South Sudan mission, saying that this was the first indication of peace and security co-operation progress between Viet Nam and the UN.
She said the UN highly appreciated Viet Nam's contributions as peacekeeping operations become more complex, affirming that her agency would work to ensure safety for the two Vietnamese officers.
Following China's act of placing its oil rig in Viet Nam's waters, Ban Ki-moon made a statement stressing that it was necessary to use peaceful measures on the basis of respect for international law to solve the issue, Haq said.
She also vowed to convey Dung's appeal to Ban Ki-moon to continue taking practical actions to address the situation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh met UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Haq on Monday, stating that joining the UN peacekeeping force was a serious and long-term commitment that Viet Nam made with the hope of contributing to the goal of world peace.
Viet Nam was also working hard to create a legal framework for its participation in UN peacekeeping operations, he added.
The Deputy PM also expressed delight at the progress in multi-faceted co-operation between Viet Nam and the UN, affirming that the Vietnamese Government valued the agency's assistance in finance, techniques and experience.
For her part, Haq spoke highly of Viet Nam's contributions to global issues pertaining to peace, security, co-operation and development, especially the country's commitment to actively taking part in UN peacekeeping activities.
Haq also pledged that the UN would continue supporting Viet Nam in this work. — VNS
