HA NOI (VNS) — The sixth session of the 13th National Assembly on Saturday elected additional members to join the NA Standing Committee.
They are: Nguyen Duc Hien, a member of the NA People's Aspiration Committee; Nguyen Lam Thanh, Vice Chairman of the NA Council of Ethnic Affairs; Pham Tri Thuc, Vice Chairman of the NA Law Committee; Nguyen Van Tuyet, Vice Chairman of the NA Committee for Culture, Education, Youth and Children; Dang Thuan Phong, Vice Chairman of the NA Committee for Social Affairs; and Vu Hai Ha, Vice Chairman of the NA Committee for External Relations.
Deputies also discussed the draft Amended Customs Law, which focuses on adopting a modern customs management model in line with the international practices to protect the interests of sovereignty and national security while attracting foreign investment.
The amended law is being framed by summarising and evaluating the results of the 11-year implementation of the Customs Law 2001.
Notably, the draft law regulates the power of Customs to follow up on cases where there is evidence that goods have been smuggled across borders where there are no Customs operations.
Many members agreed that this would allow Customs track down smugglers outside designated Customs areas.
Other members called for the need to intensify co-operation between custom officials and agencies to deal with this type of crime, which is said to becoming more complex.
The draft Law is expected to be passed in the next general session.
The present session is scheduled to end on Friday after a week of focusing on question-and-answer sessions of cabinet members. — VNS
