Viet Nam mourns General Giap

HA NOI (VNS) — The national flag was flown at half-mast at state agencies and public places as of 12am on Friday, officially starting the two-day national funeral for the legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap.

According to the Funeral Committee, the memorial services will begin on 7:30am and will last to 9:00pm on Saturday at the National Morgue at No.5, Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.

As the memorial services end, a motorcade carrying the General's coffin will ltravel through major streets in Hanoi, including Hoang Dieu Street where the General's house is located, before heading for Noi Bai International Airport.

A Vietnam Airlines ATR72 plane is tasked with transporting the coffin from Noi Bai to Dong Hoi airport where another motorcade is ready to drive the coffin to his resting place in Yen Island in Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province.

The memorial and burial services will be broadcast live by Vietnam Television and Radio the Voice of Vietnam.

Respect-paying and memorial services will also be held at the office of the Quang Binh provincial People's Committee and the Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City at the same time with the ceremonies in Hanoi.

During the two-day national funeral, from 12am on October 11 to 12am on October 13, all State offices and public facilities will fly the national flag at half-mast and all entertainment activities will be stopped. — VNS
