China's fishing ban violates sovereignty

Update: May, 16/2013 - 09:21

HA NOI (VNS)– Viet Nam considers China's unilateral ban on fishing in the East Sea "null and void," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi.

"China's unilateral implementation of the ban on fishing in the East Sea, which encompasses some of Viet Nam's waters, violates Viet Nam's sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago and its sovereign rights and jurisdiction over its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea," Nghi explained.

He added that the ban also contradicts the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC). — VNS
