HA NOI (VNS)— State President Truong Tan Sang yesterday proposed that Viet Nam and Canada should make regular exchanges of high-ranking delegations and boost trade and investment.
He said this while receiving the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, John R. Baird, who is on an official visit here.
President Sang highly appreciated this visit as an important event on the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
He also expressed his hope that Canada would keep creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese people there to integrate and contribute more to that nation's development and the two countries' relations.
Baird affirmed that Canada has always highly valued the role and status of Viet Nam in its diplomatic strategy.
He said his country is paying a lot of attention to Southeast Asia and the potential of co-operating with countries in the region, including Viet Nam.
Canada's enterprises and organisations want to keep boosting investment in Viet Nam.
Baird also hoped the two countries would strengthen their relations both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Vietnam's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pham Binh Minh, also met with Baird yesterday.
Both sides agreed to improve their bilateral co-operation in trade, investment, science and technology, education and training as well as tighten their co-ordination in multilateral forums.— VNS
