HA NOI — Viet Nam considered the European Union a top partner with a priority position in Viet Nam's foreign policy, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said yesterday.
Trong was hosting a reception for the head of the EU delegation to Viet Nam Ambassador Franz Jessen in Ha Noi yesterday.
Trong said the signing of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the start of the negotiations on a free trade agreement were milestones that presented challenges requiring both sides' political determination, goodwill and sincere co-operation for best results.
He wished Jessen success in promoting friendship and co-operation between Viet Nam and the EU.
For his part, Jessen affirmed that boosting comprehensive co-operative relations between the EU and Viet Nam was the most important task in his term of office.
He reaffirmed the EU's pledge to assist Viet Nam's efforts in building and developing the country, implementing its renewal process and facilitating its international integration, despite the impacts of the current financial crisis.
Jessen spoke highly of Viet Nam's position and role in the EU's external relations, expressing his hope that the country would further enhance the co-operative relations between EU and ASEAN. — VNS
