HA NOI — Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi yesterday opposed Taiwan's plan to conduct a live-ammunition drill on Ba Binh island in Viet Nam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, saying that the act seriously violated Viet Nam's sovereignty.
Nghi made the statement at a regular press briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while answering reporters' questions on Viet Nam's reaction to Taiwan's announcement on Monday of a drill in September.
He said: "We protest Taiwan's plan. Taiwan's plan of a live-ammunition drill on Ba Binh island in Viet Nam's Truong Sa archipelago seriously violates Viet Nam's sovereignty, threatening peace, stability, security and maritime safety, causing tensions and complicating the situation in the East Sea.
"We request Taiwan immediately cancel this plan," he stressed. — VNS
