HA NOI — The second Expert's Working Group meeting of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM+) opened in Ha Noi yesterday with the theme of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
The meeting, co-chaired by Viet Nam and China, was attended by officials of 18 ADMM-Plus member countries as well as representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat
Speaking at the event, Viet Nam's Deputy Minister of Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, said Viet Nam viewed the meeting as being of great importance.
He said it did not only handled humanitarian issues, but also reflected a desire for all member countries to maintain peace, development and stability. It also proved the increasingly essential role of ADMM-Plus structure in defence co-operation among the 18 countries.
Discussions at the meeting focused on legal aspects of the use of military in regional and international humanitarian activities, the training of people and the experiences of armed forces in coping with storms, floods and landslides.
