HA NOI — Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has re-affirmed Viet Nam's continued active participation in the ASEAN Community, with an aim to responsibly maximise the benefits of membership.
In his article "Towards a United, Strong and Open ASEAN Community" written to mark the 45th anniversary of ASEAN on August 8, Minh said that Viet Nam would "take stronger action to seriously and fully deliver on its ASEAN commitments and actively and proactively join other ASEAN member countries in realising the ASEAN Community by 2015, ensuring a good start for the ASEAN Community with the goal of bringing about peace, social welfare and prosperity for the people of all countries in the region."
The article reviewed 45 years of ASEAN development and its security co-operation initiatives for preserving regional peace and stability, including the ASEAN Regional Forum. It also highlighted the community's central role in such regional issues as the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and current calls to establish a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
