HA NOI — More than 100 Vietnamese and Lao delegates attended the third Viet Nam-Laos People's Friendship Festival, which opened here yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and Politburo member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and Minister of Education and Sports Phankham Viphavan were among the delegates.
At the opening of the six-day festive event, the Viet Nam-Laos Friendship Association's President Vu Trong Kim welcomed the Lao delegates to the festival, as both countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 35th anniversary of the Viet Nam-Laos Friendship and Co-operation Treaty.
Phankham Viphavan, who is also President of the Laos-Viet Nam Friendship Association, said the Laos-Viet Nam special friendship was a valuable treasure that helped safeguard the existence of both countries, which was a rare occurrence in international relations.
He said that Laos would do its best to educate all its people, especially the younger generations, about the traditional friendship and special solidarity and fine relationship between the two Parties and nations.
The same day, President of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour Dang Ngoc Tung held talks with President of the Lao Federation of Trade Unions Khamla Lolonsy in Ha Noi.
Also yesterday, Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai hosted a reception for Lao Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Thonglun Sisoulith and Vientiane Party Committee Secretary and Mayor Soukanh Mahalat.
The Lao guests are in the city to attend a meeting celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The same day, Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Le Hoang Quan also received a high-ranking delegation from Champasak province, led by provincial Governor Sonexay Siph-andone. — VNS
