BA RIA–VUNG TAU — President Truong Tan Sang yesterday visited the Cai Mep International Terminal in the southern province of Ba Ria–Vung Tau on a working trip to review socio-economic development in the province.

Accompanied by the provincial leadership, he discussed with the terminal's management board the difficulties that it was facing and promised to have concerned agencies help resolve them.

He encouraged managers, staff and workers at the terminal to make all efforts during a time of economic hardship and contribute to the growth of logistics in the country.

This would help the nation advance in the task of achieving sustainable development, he said.

During the visit, President Sang observed the loading of agricultural, seafood and textile containers on the 67,637 DWT OOCL Hong Kong, a vessel operating on a direct route to the US.

The terminal, located in the province's Tan Thanh District, about 80km away from HCM City, has a capacity of 1.1 billion TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), a 600m-long wharf and 14m-deep channel. It can accommodate vessels of up to 160,000DWT.

In the 14 months that it has been operational (since March 2011), the terminal has accommodated 151 vessels and handled 351,000 TEUs. — VNS
