Mexican Senate leader to visit

HA NOI — Senate President of Mexico, Jose Gonzalez Morfin, will pay a three-day official visit to Viet Nam starting tomorrow at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.

Lao leader looks to bolster ties

VIENTIANE — Laos wants to strengthen co-operation with Viet Nam, especially in developing remote areas to quickly reduce poverty, said Lao Party General Secretary and President Choummaly Sayasone.

Choummaly made the statement while receiving Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, chairman of the Viet Nam-Laos Co-operation Sub-committee, in Vientiane yesterday.

Phuc is attending the 34th session of the Viet Nam-Laos Joint Intergovernmental Committee on economic, cultural, education, scientific and technological co-operation.

The deputy prime minister promised to do his utmost to contribute to the two nations' achievements.

Both sides said they expected two-way trade to reach US$1 billion this year and $2 billion by 2015.

US 7th Fleet chief comes to VN

HA NOI — Commander of the US 7th Fleet, Vice Admiral Scott H Swift, is making a working visit to Viet Nam.

He was received by Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Viet Nam People's Army yesterday, who congratulated the Commander on his appointment as head of the US 7th Fleet.

Defence ties between Viet Nam and the US were being promoted in such areas as delegation exchange, training, military medicine, search and rescue and overcoming the aftermath of the war in Viet Nam, Tuan said.

Vice Admiral Swift said Viet Nam and the US had seen progress in co-operation, especially since the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral defence co-operation at the deputy minister level.

He said he would do his utmost to develop co-operation between the two countries.

VN, Singapore talk defence

HA NOI — Viet Nam and Singapore have agreed to continue to exchange military delegations at all levels and further boost co-operation in the naval sector, English training, defence industries and military trade.

This was agreed at the three-day fourth Viet Nam-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue that ends in Ha Noi today.

The Vietnamese delegation is led by Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence, while the Singaporean delegation is headed by Chang Chi Phu, Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Ministry of Defence.

The two sides exchanged views on regional and world security situations and assessed bilateral defence ties during the previous year. — VNS
