HÀ NỘI — Locals in Thị Cấm Village in Từ Liêm District organised a rice cooking contest in the communal house of the village on Friday, a custom that is practised annually on the eighth day of the Lunar Year to wish for happiness and prosperity for villagers in the new year.

Legend had it that very long ago, when the army leader Phan Công led the country against the Chinese Thục dynasty and passed by Thị Cấm Village, the villagers gathered and served rice for the soldiers. After the country was victorious, Phan Công stayed at the village and taught locals how to farm. Since then, villagers have held a rice cooking contest in the communal house every new year.

Four young men start the contest by running to the village’s well to take water for their team to cook rice. Rice is then soaked in the water before being put in the stove.

The village elders will evaluate the quality of the rice pots made by the four teams.

Good rice is soft and fragrant. When the cover of the pot is lifted, the fragrance of the rice should waft in the air.
