HCM City's Police on Wednesday stopped handing out leaflets to tourists warning them to watch out for robberies, rip-offs and taxi scams.

The suspension came just one week after the leaflet, Travel safety: Prevention is better than cure, written in both English and Vietnamese, was distributed to tourists for the first time.

As the police explained, the handouts were condemned by many for making tourists, especially foreigners, afraid of the city.

Just last month, the New York based Travel and Leisure magazine listed Viet Nam as one of 10 countries to be "Best Countries for Solo Travellers".

The magazine said that best countries meant safest and friendliest countries, and Viet Nam ranked sixth.

Are you travelling or living in Viet Nam? What do you think of the leaflet? Do such handouts make you feel safer? Would they help improve your travel experience?

Please reply by email to: opinion@vnsmail.com, or by fax to (84-4) 3 933 2311. Letters can be sent to The Editor, Viet Nam News, 79 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Ha Noi. Replies to next week's questions must be received by Thursday morning, November 6, 2014. — VNS
