The head of the Ha Noi Union of Science and Technology, Nguyen Tung Lam, spoke to Kinh te va Do thi (Economy and City) about confidence votes on senior Ha Noi officials.
What are your opinions about the decision?
I think it reflects the city's resolve to carry out the Party's renewal process in assessing cadres, and I totally support it. It means Ha Noi will be the first place in the country to conduct the confidence vote. Of course, there are bound to be difficulties and challenges, but we'll learn as we go and I'm confident of succeeding.
The confidence motion vote is a way for people in high positions to show that they deserve their positions of power, and if not, decide whether they should stay in office or not.
I think that the annual confidence motion vote will lay a foundation for the "culture of resigning."
What should we do to ensure a fair confidence motion vote?
To make the vote effective, we need candidates and the voters to act responsibly. For the former, I think they know their strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else.
However, the most important point is that they really want to improve themselves and learn from their mistakes. Voters must be objective and try to look at the people they are voting for.
During a meeting with voters, some deputies from the People's Council were cautious about how they answered voters' questions. What's your response to that?
I don't think that senior officials will try to avoid confrontation with voters. I think voters are smart and know the difference between right and wrong.
I think the most important point for officials is their work performance. If they put the people's interests above their own, there is no doubt that they will win the people's support. In other words, efficiency is the best way for any official to receive a vote of confidence. — VNS
